RUBY: How long have you attended Troy United Methodist Church?

My family and I joined TUMC in 1965.

RUBY: What drew you to this church?

Our oldest child would be starting school and we felt that she should go to church where she attended school.   My maternal great-grandparents and grandparents have a history in the church.  The original church on Main Street  was built on ground owned and sold to the church by my ancestors.

RUBY: Which service do you typically attend?

I attend the 10:30 service and sing in the chancel choir.

RUBY: Share a favorite Bible verse and/or inspirational song, and why this is a favorite.

Matthew 6:34   Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.  It was my grandmother's favorite.  She raised me, my sister and my brother.  It was sung at her funeral.

RUBY: Tell us about your involvement at Troy UMC and/or the community.

  

I volunteer at many jobs in the church.  I fold and stuff bulletins, straighten the sanctuary, wash & iron table cloths, all on a rotating basis with others..  I am president of the UMW, sing in the chancel choir, attend Sunday school and bible studies. I am a member of TUMS, do the journey walking twice a week and play bocce ball. I square dance and belong to the Wood River Hoedowners.  I am a Red Hatter and love to play cards and board games, especially pinochle and scrabble.  

I belong to the Jarvis Township Senior Citizens. I was secretary of the board, vice president of the corporation and delivered meals on wheels.  I still am on the board and sub when needed to deliver meals. I have subbed as a cafeteria worker for Triad the last 7 years.  I was a secretary/ receptionist for 20+ years before I retired. I like to sew, knit, crochet and read.  I go to lunch with different friends a couple of times a month.

RUBY: It was great seeing you at the Mystery Dinner Theater benefiting Imagine No More Malaria. Which food item did you bring, and would you mind sharing the recipe?

 

I brought a casserole of scalloped corn to the mystery dinner. 

Recipe:  

1 18oz can creamed corn              

1 18oz can whole kernel corn              

2 eggs, slightly beaten              

1 box of Jiffy corn muffin mix              

1 cup sour cream             

1/2 cup melted butter              

4 oz grated swiss or chedder cheese 

Combine the beaten eggs, muffin mix, corn, sour cream and butter.  Put into ungreased 9x13 baking dish.  Bake at 350 degrees for 35 minutes.  Place grated cheese on top and bake another 10 minutes.

RUBY: What piece of advice would you offer another woman?

Be a volunteer in your church and community.

RUBY: Tell us about your family.

 

I have been a widow for 12 years.  I have 5 children and 13 grandchildren. My children all went to college and have great careers. All have moved away from Troy.  So I get to travel to Texas and Pennsylvania, besides Missouri and northern Illinois.  I have a nurse, electrical engineer, 2 lawyers and a pharmacist. My 2 oldest grandchildren are in college.  Grandson has just finished his first year of seminary, and my granddaughter just finished her 3rd year in pre-med. I enjoy visiting and sitting with all the grandkids, their ages are 23 down to 3. That includes triplets who just turned 5 this week.
