God Bought Me Breakfast

I’m a what you would call a realist. Which is really just a nice way of saying, “I’m cynical.” Not just about God, but everything. If it's not logical then it is just not logical, and that is that. By knowing this small detail about me, you can probably understand why it's been so tough for me to secure a solid relationship with God. It is all so terribly confusing to me. So many things just don’t make sense.

Well on August 29th, 2013, God "bought" me breakfast, and my life has been changing ever since. I was in the McDonald's drive-thru line feeling guilty for just ordering the ENTIRE burrito meal. While waiting in line, I was reading on my iPhone a RUBY Magazine blog post titled "Run for God" by Beth Miramonti. She was blogging about a recent trip her and Masja LaRue had spontaneously taken to Tennessee. A trip where Beth ran her personal best 5K, they enjoyed white water rafting…blah, blah, blah. I hope Beth and Masja both know that I mean “blah, blah, blah” in the most pleasant way possible. I’m fairly certain I’m not alone when I admit that sometimes hearing about others accomplishments is motivating, but then sometimes we find ourselves being selfish and turning their joys into our sorrows because we haven’t been able to accomplish those same things. So while I’m truly very proud of Beth’s accomplishments, the truth was that on that particular morning I was reading about them while sitting in a drive-thru line waiting for a 1000 calorie breakfast to be handed to me through a window in a paper bag. You can imagine the guilt consuming me.

Just then, I looked up from my phone to creep up a bit further in line. My eyes zeroed in on a SUV with a proudly displayed Joy 99.1 sticker. The thought of God himself didn't really enter my mind, but I did feel what one may call a "nudge" suggesting that I should pay for the woman's bill that was behind me driving a minivan. I instantly started contemplating with myself on what I should do with the only $5 in cash I had on me. Should I use my debit card instead? Should I cancel my order and just pay for hers? What if she has five kids in the backseat of that minivan and her order ends up being really expensive? Hmmm??? So I did the "logical" thing and moved forward in line preparing to pay for my own bill at the same time promising to “pay it forward” some other time really, really soon. Logical, right?

Well, when I got to the window...it turns out that the SUV with the Joy 99.1 sticker had paid for MY meal. Wow! For this lifelong skeptic, THAT small gesture was huge!!! I told a few friends who are full of faith, and they, of course, confirmed their love for Him, but I still didn't quite "get it." Why can't I just GET IT?!?!

It wasn't until after finishing the book Waking Up In Heaven by Crystal McVea and after talking with a friend at church last Sunday that I realized. . . GOD bought me breakfast!!! Me!!! He bought someone breakfast who doubts Him on a daily basis.

Since then it has occurred to me that I guess I’m now a believer. I still have so many other questions to be answered, but my new found faith is comforting. Maybe next time He will buy me a healthy salad instead. Until then . . .

We Said YES

Reading woman blessing Beth Miramonti's RUBY Magazine post, Say YES  motivated me to say, "Yes!" to FREE Yoga under the St. Louis Arch today with women blessings Beth P. and Christin F.

"Presented by Big Bend Yoga Center, Great Rivers Greenway, and the National Park Service, the goal of the event was to build a sense of community while recognizing the importance of our rivers to the vitality of the region"  (Deer, stltoday.com).

The soothing voice of yoga teacher Saul David Raye guided the event and was accompanied by acclaimed New Orleans musicians Sean Johnson and the Wild Lotus Band.

Women, men, and children of all shapes, sizes, and ages stretched, swayed, and shimmied on the grass on the grounds of the Arch.

From our Happy Baby poses, we then assisted the person adjacent to us in his/her stretch by pulling on his/her ankle (or big toe as Christin pulled on mine).

While in Shavasana or Corpse Pose, the view -clouds floating beyond the silver curve amidst a sapphire blue background- was breathtaking.  All of my troubles floated away in the white tufts of sky smoke.  Thoroughly relaxed, we walked back to our car and contemplated with much anticipation our next Faithful Fitness Fellowship outing.

Looking for Volunteer Builders and Cooks!

Airplane Park Playground Build | September 18th – 22nd

The time has arrived for the build of the playground being spearheaded by the Edwardsville Rotary. The build will be Wednesday, September 18 through Sunday, September 22 from sunrise to sunset each day. Hopefully, with the exception being Sunday the 22nd which, if everything goes according to plans, we will be having a Completion Celebration in the afternoon.
We need volunteers. The actual building of the playground is done completely by community volunteers. We need volunteers who can swing hammers, hold the other end while the hammer is being swung, fetch supplies, pass out water, assist in the serving of the meals and snacks.
If you have a day, a few hours or even just one hour – your help will be greatly appreciated. Come be a part of this fabulous community project. Thousands and thousands of children will come to play for the next 50 years on the playground you helped build. (Trust me – you will tell the story. My husband, Scott, was still telling the story about how he helped build the old playground right up till the day it had to be torn down!) To volunteer email Dan Abegg at dabegg@4thebank.com or Brian Mulhall at Brian@brianmulhall.com.
Calling all cooks!
We are looking for help to feed the masses. Most of the spaces are filled except for the Wednesday evening and the Friday evening meals. Both are served at 5:00 p.m. So I was thinking, “How about a community pot luck”. I have had a few of our customers ask what they could do to help – so this is what we need. We need for you to bring your favorite pot-luck dish. Doesn’t matter what it is – that way there will be something for everyone. Send me an email or give us a call at the Chef’s Shoppe and let us know which meal you can help us.

Wednesday, September 18, dish to arrive by 4:30 p.m.
or Friday, September 20, dish to arrive by 4:30 p.m.
Email Nancy at chefs.shoppe@prodigy.net
or call Chef’s Shoppe @ 618-659-9840

Be sure to include your mailing address with the email and after the build I will be sending coupons for a free bag of popcorn for your support.
This is a great community with people who help one another. Let’s all pitch in and help get this playground build so we too can tell our kids, grandkids and anyone else who will listen that we helped build the Airplane Park Playground!

Welcome September with Faithful Fitness Fellowship

The new year brings many new routines, classes, schedules, teachers, sports and church activities ramping up after the summer break.  So what about you? What does your calendar look like? What does your diet look like? Your fitness plan? Your spiritual life?
Friends, I invite you to join me this month as we take a realistic look at where we are, think about where we want to be and set some goals to get there. I know, I know, it’s a Holiday weekend! So go, enjoy your family and friends for an extra day, but first commit to coming back on Tuesday and joining this fellowship as we spend the month of September in self-discovery. Assessing where we stand: Spiritually, Physically, Nutritionally and Emotionally.
Our home base will be a public Facebook page called Faithful Fitness Fellowship. Come on by and “like” the page for updates in your news feed. If you are not on Facebook, drop me an email at FaithfulFitnessFellowship@gmail.com.

Run for God

What do you do when your summer is coming to a close, you still haven’t lost that extra weight, and your soul is yearning to just run away? DO IT! Run away, Run for God!
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28
Recently, I was feeling a bit overwhelmed and restless. After listening to several friends tell of their vacations, I decided to look for a weekend getaway in Tennessee, the place where I spent carefree summers as a child. Back where Southern hospitality is as sweet as the tea they serve. Where red dirt dusts your feet and fresh streams wash them clean.
While researching events for Faithful Fitness Fellowship, I happened to see a new race, The Pinky 5K. An all women, evening walk/run, sponsored by Run for God, in Chattanooga, TN. A quick check of the calendar, recruiting a friend to join me, and the trip was a go! (Thanks Masja!)
Packet pick up was scheduled for 6pm Friday August 23rd at Tennessee River Park, so as soon as the kids were off to school, we loaded up and headed for the hills, literally. If you have never been to the Great Smoky Mountains might I suggest pinning it to your “Places to See” board! This majestic area is, in my opinion, some of the most beautiful land God ever created.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Genesis 1:1
Singing to an 80s movie music montage, navigating through a downpour in Nashville, and narrowly missing what appeared to be a live Georgia bulldog standing in the middle of the interstate, we arrived at the hotel with just enough time to lace up our running shoes and check in for the race.

The storm caught up with us, and we spent the rain delay crouched under the Dupont Parkway Bridge watching the lightning show and the majestic Southern Belle cruising slowly by on the Tennessee River.

My goal for the event was to finish with a 15 min/mile average time. After a high 5 from Pinky, we were off and running. Most of the course was on a concrete walkway, meandering through the park and beside the river. Solid footing was a blessing for the rolling hills and semi-darkened pathway. Masja kept me motivated and encouraged me to keep running. Exhausted and sweaty, a mere 40 minutes and 31 seconds later we crossed the finish line. 13 min/miles! That, my friends, is a PR! (“Personal Record” for you non-runners out there.)

Do you see what this means—all these pioneers who blazed the way, all these veterans cheering us on? It means we’d better get on with it. Strip down, start running—and never quit! No extra spiritual fat, no parasitic sins. Keep your eyes on Jesus, who both began and finished this race we’re in. Study how he did it. Because he never lost sight of where he was headed—that exhilarating finish in and with God—he could put up with anything along the way: Cross, shame, whatever. And now he’s there, in the place of honor, right alongside God. When you find yourselves flagging in your faith, go over that story again, item by item, that long litany of hostility he plowed through. That will shoot adrenaline into your souls! Hebrews 12:1-3 (MSG)
So what do two 40-somethings do to celebrate a great race? Head to Wal-Mart to gear up for a morning white water rafting trip, of course! More on that adventure in my next post!

Good News

Isaiah 52:7
How beautiful upon the mountains are the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace, who brings good news of happiness, who publishes salvation, who says to Zion, "Your God reigns."

Connect with Karen Paubel

I would like to introduce to you a woman blessing and prayer warrior, Karen Paubel,

Karen, would you tell us a bit about yourself and your family, please?

All of my life I have had a heart for prayer. I am a person who loves great resources, especially free ones. So when I learned young that I could call on heaven, I grabbed hold of it and never let go of prayer to my Heavenly Father. My father was a great prayer warrior and passed that passion to me. My life calling is to be a intercessor.  One of my prayer passions is to pray my children. I also love to encourage and equip others to pray for their children. When my husband and I were dating, he always said he wanted seven children and I would just laugh. Now after 23 years of marriage and seven children later, I am still laughing. I guess I married a man who keeps his word.  I homeschool my children. My children range in age from 19 to 8 years old. My heart's desire for homeschooling is to train them up in the Lord.  Raising children is such a heavy responsibility, way beyond my human ability. I call on God daily to equip me to raise an army for Christ.

I found you through a friend forwarding your email. How and when did you get started emailing "Daily Prayer to Pray in Agreement for Our Children and Grandchildren"?

About 4 years ago I started a group called PM- Praying Moms. We would meet once a month in my home and pray for our children while they played.  We met for a few years and this daily e-mail grew out of us daily praying in agreement for our children. A Praying Grandmas group has started from this group for the last few years. One of my friends has started up the Praying Moms group again. The Daily Prayer email has grown just by mothers passing on to other mothers. There are also many fathers on the list also.

Will you share a sample of your daily emails?

Prayer for Gratitude

Lord,  I thank You for this precious gift or my children and grandchildren. You have given them to me and now I dedicate them to You. You alone know what they need. I release them to You to care and for and protect, and I commit myself to pray everything you put on my heart. Teach me how to pray and guide me in what to pray with regard to their lives. Help me not to impose my own will when I am praying for them, but rather enable me to always pray that Your will be done in their lives. Because Your Word says that every good gift comes from You. I know that You have given me my children for me to raise. You will help me to do that. I invite You to  be in control of their lives. I rely on You for everything, and this day I trust my child into Your care.

Adapted from: Prayers and Promises for My Little Girl by Stormie Omartian

Prayer is the most effective tool a parent has. When teaching discipline and modeling fail, prayer succeeds. Prayer goes where a parent can't. It softens hard hearts, enlightens darkened minds, and guides lost souls. Prayer works. As a parent, we don't have to settle for having the kind do children that our society seems to determine to produce. As praying parents, we don't have to sit quietly by and watch while our sons and daughter are led astray by the allure of culture. Prayer is a parent's way of taking matters into God's hands. So pray. Pray big, bold, biblical prayers for your child. God is ready to answer, and he doesn't want you to settle for less than his best or to compromise when you pray for your child. The Impact of Praying Kids

It is important that we encourage this passion for prayer when we see it, not quench it-so the fires of revival can be birthed again from their prayers. Our youth have the potential to make huge differences in their world and our through their prayer lives and their ministry for Christ. They are the future leaders of the Christian world movement, and adults know it. Older Christians are often inspired to follow young people as they begin to manifest a passion and proactiveness toward the things of God.

I believe that during the dawn of the twenty-first century God is up to something more expansive that we have previously imagined. From my vantage point the children and youth take center stage.

Do you have a favorite Bible verse you would like to share?

Years ago, I heard a sermon by Charles Stanley on the Life Changing Prayer from Colossians. It inspired me so much that it has been my life and prayer verse ever since.

For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives so that you may live a life worthy of the Lord and please him in every way: bearing fruit in every good work, growing in the knowledge of God,  being strengthened with all power according to his glorious might so that you may have great endurance and patience, and giving joyful thanks to the Father, who has qualified you  to share in the inheritance of his holy people in the kingdom of light.

How about a favorite song?

Find Us Faithful

by Steve Greene

We're pilgrims on the journey

Of the narrow road

And those who've gone before us line the way

Cheering on the faithful, encouraging the weary

Their lives a stirring testament to God's sustaining grace

Surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses

Let us run the race not only for the prize

But as those who've gone before us

Let us leave to those behind us

The heritage of faithfulness passed on through godly lives

CHORUS:

Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful

May the fire of our devotion light their way

May the footprints that we leave

Lead them to believe

And the lives we live inspire them to obey

Oh may all who come behind us find us faithful

After all our hopes and dreams have come and gone

And our children sift through all we've left behind

May the clues that they discover and the memories they uncover

Become the light that leads them to the road we each must find

Anything else you think our readers should know?

This about says it all:

One generation commends your works to another;
they tell of your mighty acts.
They speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty—
and I will meditate on your wonderful works.

They tell of the power of your awesome works—
and I will proclaim your great deeds.
They celebrate your abundant goodness
and joyfully sing of your righteousness.

                                                       Psalm 145:4-7

When Mama prays . . .

When Mama prays, I hear her voice so lilting and so light.
When Mama prays, I lay me down and drift off into night.
When Mama prays, I clasp my hands and bow my little head.
When Mama prays, we bless the meals and bless us into bed.
When Mama prays and asks the Lord to fold me in his arms.
When Mama prays it comforts me and keeps me far from harms.
When Mama prays me off to school, I know my day is right.
When Mama prays, “God guide the steps,” I know His strength and might.
When Mama prays me out the door and on my merry way,
When Mama prays, He sees the strife and keeps the cares at bay.

God told me today . . .

“Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own. But one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”  Philippians 3:13-14 (ESV)

Just as Paul wrote to fellow Christians back in his day, I write to you. I am by NO means an expert; I make mistakes, miss deadlines and fail at times. Today is a brand new day, a new start, a do-over. Move on from what did not work yesterday, last week last year. Start today and give Him your best self.
I believe strongly that my body is God’s temple, that if I have invited Jesus into my heart, I had better get that guest room up to the standards He deserves.
As many of you know I having been working on my weight, but you may not know exactly how. I want to share with you what’s going on with a little project I call Faithful Fitness Friends. FF started last January and has continued throughout 2012. After much prayer and consideration, I felt the need to share what God has been doing through me with others. I started an on-line Facebook group and asked permission to meet at the church for group workout sessions. We competed in 3 5Ks last year and a couple plank challenges. We want to do that and more this year, and we want you to do it too!

Our Facebook Group is a private group where I attempt to share information daily about what it means to live wholly Holy, in mind body and spirit; encouraging support, accountability and community. We would like to meet face to face, possibly once a month, at the church for the same type of sharing. We are looking into times and spaces available.
For the workouts, we have been using videos by Leslie Sansone, Michelle Spadafora, Brooke Boone. Sessions last 30-45 minutes depending on the video and the amount of energy we can work up together! We are beginning this year with morning sessions @ 5:15 am in the upper Youth area on Tuesdays and Thursdays. There are evening sessions being considered once again for Monday or Tuesday nights. Also, I can workout @ 7am on Saturdays. If these times and dates don’t work for you, PLEASE speak up and let us know what will. I want to find a place and people to join you on your journey!
I do not believe in diets, fads and quick fixes; I’m learning the benefits of healthy eating, regular exercise and prayer. With God’s strength and support, I have managed to lose over 50 pounds, probably closer to 75! I feel better than I have in years and am able to do things I have never done before. I invite you to join me and others as we attempt to stay Faithfully Fit in 2013!
